Esperance sits on Western Australia's south coast, about 750 kilometres from Perth by road or a 90-minute flight.
However you arrive, the journey is part of the trip. The road crosses Wheatbelt farmland, wildflower country and salt lakes before it meets the Southern Ocean, and a plane or coach window shows you the same country from a different angle.

Not for the main sights. Many highlights, including Cape Le Grand National Park, are reachable in a 2WD. Some tracks, such as those beyond Thomas River in Cape Arid National Park, need a 4WD, so check conditions before you go.
If you’re simply travelling between Esperance and Balladonia, go via Norseman. The Balladonia Track is an unmaintained, 4WD-only track. It is rough, remote and often closed, phone reception is limited, and towing is not advised. Experiencing trouble on this route can mean a major rescue operation – the Shire of Dundas advises travelling the Balladonia track is “at your own risk”. For more info visit the Dundas Shire and Esperance Shire road closures pages.
We suggest arriving before dark. Wildlife are most active around dawn and dusk, increasing the chance of collision.
Esperance is an agricultural area, and from October to December road trains carry goods to the Port, so some roads are busier than usual. If you’re arriving from the west, we recommend the Great Ocean Drive scenic route into town, which keeps you clear of the truck traffic heading to the Port. Allow a little extra time and give road trains plenty of room.

No. Dogs aren’t permitted in national parks or nature reserves, even on a leash or inside your vehicle. Wharton Beach at Orleans Bay is a beautiful, dog-friendly alternative.
