Tours

Some of Esperance's best places are easiest to reach with someone who knows them well. Local guides can take you over the coastline by helicopter, under the stars on a summer night, out to the islands by boat, along 4WD tracks into the national parks and onto Country to learn its stories. You can even make your own piece of art in a glass studio. Choose your element and book the experience that suits you.

Air

  • Scenic flights

Seeing Esperance from above makes it clear why the coastline is so celebrated: white beaches, granite headlands, the islands of the Recherche Archipelago and the inland lakes, all in one view. Over the summer months, HeliSpirit's helicopter tours show you the whole region in a single flight, which is ideal if your time is short or you want the full picture before exploring on foot.

  • Stargazing

Away from city lights, Esperance's summer night sky is something special. On a guided tour with Ningaloo Stars, you'll find your way around the southern sky, from the Milky Way to the constellations and planets, and hear the stories behind them.

Water

Wildlife is wild, so every sighting is a bonus rather than a certainty. Keep your distance, and never touch marine life.

  • Island cruises

The granite islands of the Recherche Archipelago are best seen from the water. Family-run since 1983, Esperance Island Cruises takes you out among them, with the chance to spot seals, sea lions, dolphins and seabirds along the way.

  • Woody Island day trips

A day on Woody Island lets you slow down and settle into island time. After a scenic ferry ride, take a guided walk through the nature reserve, snorkel or fish in Shearwater Bay, or simply relax on the deck and take in the views.

  • Fishing charters

Esperance's deep offshore waters are known for snapper, breaksea cod and samsonfish, and a charter puts you right on the fishing grounds with skippers who know them. Esperance Diving & Fishing has been run by the Hudson family for more than 30 years. Black Jack Charters welcomes everyone from first-timers to seasoned anglers.

Earth

  • 4WD tours

Some of Esperance's most spectacular beaches are only reachable by four-wheel drive, and a guided tour gets you there with someone who knows the sand and tides.

Tour Esperance runs private tours in luxury 4x4s. Its signature tour drives the beach into Cape Le Grand National Park to Lucky Bay, then climbs the Wylie Bay sand dunes and drives up Wylie Rock for views across Esperance Bay. Other tours range from a full day out to Wharton Beach to shorter trips to Lucky Bay Brewing or Esperance Stonehenge.

Esperance Coastal Tours can take up to nine passengers in a custom built 4x4 Toyota Hiace along the beach to Le Grand Beach, Hellfire Bay and Lucky Bay, with time to swim and explore at each stop. The vehicle has a wheelchair hoist, making it a great choice for travellers of any age or ability.

  • Cultural walks

Kepa Kurl (Esperance) is Wudjari Nyungar Country, and walking it with a Wudjari Nyungar guide is one of the most meaningful ways to understand this place. Dabungool Cultural Experiences leads guided walks at Lake Monjingup, Hellfire Bay, the Kepwari Trail and Dempster Head, sharing seasonal plants, bush foods and the stories held in the landscape. The Lake Monjingup walk is wheelchair accessible.
Please stay on marked trails, and clean your shoes before and after each walk to help stop the spread of dieback.

  • Glass art

At Cindy Poole's studio, discarded glass is kiln-formed into contemporary art inspired by Western Australia's landscapes. Explore the gallery, take a guided tour of the studio, or design and make your own glass piece to take home on the hands-on Discover + Create tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book tours in advance?

In summer and during school holidays, yes. Many tours run with small groups and fill quickly, and some need minimum numbers to depart. Booking ahead secures your spot, and you can book directly through each tour’s listing on this page.

What’s the best time of year for a tour?

Each season suits different experiences. Summer brings warm days for cruises, helicopter flights over the coast and clear nights for stargazing. Whales migrate along the coast from around June to October, and wildflowers bloom from August to November. Autumn and spring often bring calmer days and fewer people. See the Seasons page for help planning your visit.

When can I go stargazing in Esperance?

Guided stargazing tours run over the summer months. Clear nights away from town lights give the best views, and your guide will confirm conditions on the day. Bring a warm layer, as coastal evenings can cool quickly.

Will I see whales, dolphins or seals?

You may. Seals, sea lions, dolphins and seabirds are often seen around the Recherche Archipelago. While there are no whale watching tours, you may be lucky when they pass along the coast from around June to October. Wildlife is wild, so every sighting is a bonus rather than a certainty.

What happens if the weather turns?

Flights, cruises, charters, stargazing and 4WD tours all depend on the wind, tides and cloud cover. If conditions aren’t safe or suitable, operators may reschedule or cancel. Check each operator’s booking terms on their listing, and leave a little flexibility in your plans.

Do I need a 4WD to reach the best beaches?

Some of the region’s most spectacular beaches and bays are only reachable by four-wheel drive. If you don’t have one, or would rather not drive on soft sand, a guided 4WD tour gets you there with someone who knows the tracks and tides.

Is there something hands-on I can do?

Yes. On Cindy Poole’s Discover + Create tour, you’ll learn how discarded glass is transformed through kiln-forming, then design and create your own piece to take home. It’s a good choice for a rainy day too.

Are there accessible tour options?

Yes. Dabungool Cultural Experiences’ Lake Monjingup and kwongan heathland walk is wheelchair accessible. Accessibility varies from tour to tour, so check each operator’s listing before you book.

Are tours suitable for children?

Many are, but age limits and suitability vary by tour. Check the details on each operator’s listing before you book, and see our Family Friendly page for more ideas.
