Rainy Day in Esperance: What to Do When the Weather Turns

Rain is part of life in Esperance Kepa Kurl. It’s one of the elements that shapes this place, filling the wetlands, greening the bush and sending big swells rolling into the bay.

So when the clouds roll in, take it as an invitation to slow down. Here’s how to spend a rainy day in Esperance, from galleries and local makers to cosy cafes and a front-row seat to the weather.

Esperance Museum

The Esperance Museum houses a unique collection of memorabilia dating back to the 1800s. See a range of interesting feature displays covering the region’s early pioneering history, maritime exhibits and farm machinery.

Be sure to check out the world’s most comprehensive display of NASA Skylab memorabilia. Skylab was America’s first space station which plummeted to the earth in 1979, landing to the northeast of Esperance.

The Esperance Museum is located in the old goods shed of what was the town’s original railway marshalling yards. The old building, constructed soon after the turn of the century, is a significant icon in itself, a highlight being its magnificent old beams.

View the extensive range of historical objects ranging from a locomotive engine, and early century musical instruments, along with an assortment of gear and lifeboat from the ship ‘Sanko Harvest’ which is the largest dive wreck off the Australian coast.

Esperance is a one-and-a-half-hour flight or an eight-hour drive south of Perth.

Cannery Arts Centre

The Cannery Arts Centre is the most dynamic arts facility in the region presenting contemporary visual art exhibitions in a unique historic gallery, eclectic music events, and a wide range of creative workshops.

Housed in a heritage building initially used as a fish cannery and located on the beautiful Esperance foreshore, it is also home to the Esperance Potters Club, has a quaint community garden to forage from, and an impressive lookout to conquer. There is always a reason to visit.

Mudjar Aboriginal Corporation

Aunty Joan’s Dolly Mix

Step into a wonderland of dolls that look like they might come to life.

It’s like walking backstage into an opulent dressing room “a cornucopia of swagged satin and velvet”.

The museum is the passion of the late Aunty Joan (Duncan) Stewart, who started collecting dolls later in life. It was Joan’s wish to donate the dolls to the Esperance community to make a permanent doll museum.

If you need an escape and want to feel like Alice in Wonderland visit Aunty Joan’s Dolly Mix. You can even organise a high tea by prior appointment.

Lucky Bay Brewing

At Lucky Bay Brewing they love beer and love brewing truly local craft beer even more. Lucky Bay Brewing is a microbrewery with a difference making some of the most genuinely local craft beer in Australia. Coming from the heart of the barley producing region in Western Australia’s south east, Esperance’s Lucky Bay Brewing is part of the local farming community. Being local they select the season’s best produce direct from local farmers.

They ventured into the world of beer science and after years of beer crafting they pioneered how to create tasty craft beers using up to 100 per cent raw ‘unmalted’ barley. Meaning they can get grain direct from local farmers to use in their brews. Lucky Bay Brewing is the first and only brewery in Australia to do so.

Raw ‘unmalted’ grain /barley does not need the water, energy or food miles that malted barley does to be produced. It comes direct from the farm up the road to Lucky Bay Brewing into your beer. So it’s local and environmentally friendly ! They use pure ingredients, fresh rain water, renewable engery, real hops and no preservatives with their premium local barley to bring you brews you will want to savour to the last drop, just like the local beaches.

Esperance Distillery Co

In a world that rarely slows down, Esperance Distillery Co was built on the idea that a great spirit is more than just a drink—it’s a reason to pause. Founded as a father-and-son project with a tiny 30-litre still, they’ve grown from Australia’s smallest distillery into an award-winning destination, and their focus hasn’t wavered from this craft beginning.

They use rare, local botanicals found nowhere else on earth to bottle the rugged optimism of the Esperance coastline. From their signature gins to their new whiskies and seltzers, their goal is to craft spirits that inspire real conversation, a gathering of friends, or the effortless state where the busy world drops away. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or simply washing off the workday, they craft spirits that turn a drink into an experience and a stranger into a friend.

Stop by their cellar door to taste the last frontier.

Condingup Vineyard

A boutique vineyard and winery in the Southeast Coastal region offering wine tasting in the winery itself.
All wines are made on site from exclusively hand picked, estate grown fruit. The unique varieties showcase the soil and climate of the region.

The Quarters, Esperance

The Quarters Esperance is a relaxed, welcoming restaurant serving up quality food, great coffee and well-crafted cocktails in a historical coastal venue.
Open Tuesday to Friday for brunch, lunch and dinner, and from early morning on weekends for breakfast, The Quarters is a go-to spot for locals and visitors. Sundays come alive with their popular Sunday Sessions, perfect for unwinding with friends, drinks and good vibes.
The menu focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, offering a mix of Australian favorites, rotating weekly specials, and flavors inspired by the Mediterranean and signature Sri Lankan dishes. Whether you’re stopping in for a morning coffee and house-made cakes or settling in for an evening cocktail, there’s something for every occasion.
Pet-friendly and easygoing, The Quarters also offers on-site catering for private events, making it an ideal space to gather, celebrate and connect.

Avanto Sauna

Avanto Sauna is a traditional Finnish-style dry sauna experience located on the Esperance foreshore, offering a calm space to unwind, reset, and reconnect. Designed around the elements of body, mind, and sea, Avanto combines gentle heat, coastal air, and a minimalist Nordic aesthetic to create a uniquely grounding wellness ritual. Guests move between sauna sessions and cool-down moments at their own pace, embracing relaxation, recovery, and mental clarity. Suitable for individuals, couples, and small groups, Avanto Sauna welcomes both locals and visitors seeking a restorative escape. It is a simple, authentic, and distinctly Esperance experience inspired by Nordic sauna culture and the surrounding ocean landscape.

Market Village

Located walking distance from the town centre, this little village is home to some historic buildings from the Esperance region and surrounds. The Salmons gum school, a methodist Church and The Sinclair house are some of the historic buildings in the village. Now all the buildings hold locally owned shops selling a wide range of products as well as the Esperance Visitor Centre. Every fortnight the Sunday Village markets are held here; hang out on the village green, listen to buskers, chat with the stall holders selling their wares (such as food, coffee, antiques, craft items and more). The markets run form 8:30am to 12:30pm, with extra weekends during the summer school holidays.

Flickr

Flickr Candles by TBT is a feel-good café and gift destination in central Esperance, a short walk from the beach and right in the heart of town. Family-run and known for genuinely friendly service, it’s a reliable stop for locals and visitors alike.

Coffee is the hero, served alongside a sweet cabinet that’s hard to walk past. The counter is packed with fresh muffins, slices and café favorites, plus a rotating mix of sweet and savory bites perfect for breakfast, morning tea or a quick treat on the go. For something a little different, Flickr also serves Mini Melts – adding a fun twist to the café experience and a treat that kids (and big kids) love. Prefer something icy? Frappés, milkshakes and other cold drinks make it an easy pick-me-up after a beach walk or while exploring town.

More than just a café, it’s also a place to browse. Guests can wander through the adjoining gift shop filled with locally made, hand poured candles and a curated range of gifts, homewares and lifestyle pieces – ideal for holiday souvenirs, thoughtful presents or a little something for home. With great vibes, a welcoming atmosphere from the crew and plenty to discover, Flickr is a destination worth building into any Esperance visit.
